Senior Accountant
Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Accountant to oversee full-cycle accounting and financial reporting duties for our Retirement Security Plan. The ideal candidate will apply best practices and accounting standards to manage daily, monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting, financial reporting, audit, and tax reporting requirements. This role involves serving as the primary accountant for the defined benefit retirement plan team and acting as a financial advisor to the Insurance and Financial Services Department.
Responsibilities
Oversee full-cycle accounting and financial reporting duties for the Retirement Security Plan.
Manage daily, monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting, financial reporting, audit, and tax reporting requirements.
Oversee the monthly financial reporting process, executive dashboard reporting, key metrics reporting, budgeting, and Form 990T and 5500 preparations.
Serve as the accounting liaison and financial advisor to the Insurance and Financial Services Department on Retirement Security Plan matters.
Ensure financial statements are GAAP compliant and completed timely and efficiently.
Assist with overall tax compliance strategy, including compliance with all federal and state regulations and filings.
Direct the preparation of all financial reports and tax returns in accordance with GAAP and IRS code.
Conduct in-depth review and analysis of expenses within the Insurance and Financial Services Department to ensure accurate administrative billing.
Provide financial advice and analysis to key stakeholders within Finance and Insurance and Financial Services.
Analyze monthly financial statements for the Retirement Security Plan and report significant factors to senior staff.
Manage the planning and preparation of the Retirement Security Plan budget, including stakeholder meetings for timely delivery.
Support permissible plan billing and ensure compliance with permissible expense audits.
Oversee annual audit schedules, GAAP financial statements, and ad hoc analysis related to the Retirement Security Plan’s annual audit.
Ensure the smooth and timely delivery of audited financial statements to the Insurance and Financial Services Committee of the Board of Directors.
Essential Skills
Strong accounting experience including complex reconciliations.
Experience with 401k and defined benefits retirement plans.
Proficiency in financial statement preparation and financial reporting.
Audit experience.
Experience with month-end and general ledger processes.
Ability to manage competing deadlines and multiple projects.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Effective communication skills with various levels of management.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field (Master's Degree preferred).
8 or more years of progressive accounting/finance/budgeting experience.
Prior experience in Employee Benefit Plan Administration (Defined Benefit and Defined Contribution Retirement Plans and Health and Welfare Plans).
In-depth knowledge of GAAP and IRS regulations.
CPA, CMA, or CFE license preferred.
Ability to serve as a financial advisor to various levels of management and staff.
Ability to foster cooperation and communicate effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Creative problem-solving skills to improve productivity and meet business objectives.
Work Environment
This role follows a hybrid schedule, with onsite work required on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
