Project Accountant

JOB DESCRIPTION

We are seeking a dynamic Project Accountant who is eager to impact the business quickly and take on a variety of tasks as they grow into the role. You will be responsible for tracking the company’s revenue margins, conducting budget reviews, maintaining project-related records, and defining and revising operational policies. Additionally, you will liaise with departmental heads, perform accounting tasks, prepare financial reports, manage warranty and service projects, and ensure company-wide compliance. Your role will also involve supporting audit processes, handling project-related accounting documents, and maintaining the general ledger.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Keeping track of the company’s revenue margins and conduct budget reviews to maximize profits.

  • Maintain project-related records, including contracts and change orders

  • Defining, implementing, and revising operational policies and guidelines for the organization

  • Liaising with departmental heads to develop financial plans and ensure company-wide operational compliance.

  • Performing various accounting tasks and working with other accounting staff

  • Preparing financial reports and special projects as needed

  • Presenting and explaining financial information to project managers and management

  • Manage all warranty projects

  • Manage all Service Projects

  • Support audit and internal control processes

  • Reviewing and processing accounting documents related to projects

  • Tracking budget variances, monitoring expenses, and conducting research and analysis

  • Reviewing and processing accounting documents related to projects

  • Create project accounts in the accounting system

  • Authorize access to project accounts

  • Authorize the transfer of expenses into and out of project-related accounts

  • Review and approve supplier invoices related to a project

  • Review and approve time sheets for work related to a project

  • Review and approve overhead charges to be applied to a project

  • Review account totals related to project assets and expenses

  • Investigate project variances and submit variance reports to management

  • Confer with receivables staff regarding unpaid contract billings

  • Report on project profitability to management

  • Report to management on any opportunities for additional billings

  • Create all project-related billings to customers

  • Investigate all project expenses not billed to customers

  • Respond to requests for more detail from customers

  • Approve the write-off of any project-related billings that cannot be billed to or collected from customers

  • Close out project accounts upon project completion

  • Compile information for internal and external auditors, as required

  • Maintain the general ledger, including the preparation of journal entries, account analysis, GL reconciliations and the monthly closing of the books.

HARD SKILLS

  • General accounting (5+ years)

  • Experience with large ERP systems (Sage, SAP, Oracle)

  • Manufacturing experience

  • Project accounting

JOB TYPE

This is a Contract-to-Hire position.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The position is based in Lincolnshire, IL. You will be part of a team that includes a controller, cost accountant, accounts payable, and accounts receivable staff, working closely with three project managers. The role requires onsite presence every day for the first 90 days with flexibility for personal appointments. There is an option to work four 10-hour days each week after the initial period, with a flexible start time.
